Jamie Kramer has more than a decade worth of experience as a systems administrator. For most of that time, Jamie was a Linux Systems Administrator for a large regional educational service in Nebraska. What’s your history with Moodle and Totara?

I heard about Moodle around 2005 while employed at a regional K12 educational service organization. In 2010 I began working for a large Moodle Partner, where I supported technical support and hosting aspects of Moodle. I began hacking in the code during this time and became very familiar with the fine details of hosting Moodle for K12 and higher ed needs. This led me to our startup of Elearning Experts, where we continued support, hosting, and implementation of Moodle. We also began our Totara Partnership, which was a natural evolution given that Totara is a distribution of Moodle, but geared for corporate use cases.

What are you doing now that really resonates with you?

I work with development and customization needs for Moodle and Totara. I am astonished by the unique needs each organization brings to the table. There is always something that doesn’t work just the way they need it, or some piece of functionality we can add that makes Moodle or Totara the perfect fit for the clients’ needs.

Why do you work?

I work because it is fulfilling. I like to think about problems and create solutions. I can literally walk around my office in circles for hours thinking about problems and solutions, and this makes me happy.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by success and by failure. For the failures, there is always something to learn which I think can be made into an inspiring positive thing. I am inspired by the final product, the end goal being achieved, and by the people I work with every day.

How do you recharge?

Learning new technologies, developing, making noise with guitars which I may never learn to play well, occasionally exercise, vacations, and most importantly my family.

2 truths and a lie:

  • I stood next to Linus Torvalds playing pool.
  • I hiked to the top of Longs Peak.
  • I dropped out of culinary school.

galin.vassilev@elearningexperts.net

Galin Vassilev has been working with Linux and open source products for over a decade. His career began as a web developer intern, but in short order he was promoted to systems administration work. Later as part of the team at EngineYard, he began managing Xen clusters. Galin’s expertise was later leveraged by a Moodle Partner where he served as Level 2 System Administrator and later Director of Network Operations.

What’s your history with Moodle and Totara?

I first worked with Moodle in 2010 when I took a job with a large US based Moodle Partner. My job consisted of supporting and troubleshooting hundreds of clients over 150 servers across 3 data centers. In 2012, I helped launch Elearning Experts where I serve now as CTO. We became a Totara Partner in September 2012 .

What are you doing now that really resonates with you?

Distributed computing and how it applies to Moodle and LMS design in general. The Go programming language. Artificial intelligence and what defines it as such. Quantum computing. Non-technology. History and politics also resonate with me.

Why do you work?

I would like to add a meaningful contribution to a pool of successes and failures that the next generation will inevitably have to learn from and lean on. It is the least I can do to honor the countless generations before me.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by those rare individuals who understand that working towards achieving a vision of the world as it should be rather than what it is, is not a matter of courage but rather simply a choice.

How do you recharge?

Sleep, reflection, spending time with my family and coming up with new ways to make them laugh.

  • My favorite car is the Acura NSX.
  • I like the Denver Broncos.
